Milan is Italy's capital of business, fashion and universities, and its rental market reflects it: demand is high and good apartments go quickly. These are the steps that make the search easier.
Your daily commute matters more than the neighbourhood name. Look at the metro map first, then at the streets around the stations. Brera and Navigli are beautiful but expensive and noisy; north-east Milan on the M1 (Precotto, Turro, Gorla) is quieter, cheaper and only about 20 minutes from the Duomo.
Rent is only part of the cost. Add bills (electricity, gas, heating, water), Wi-Fi, the agency fee and the deposit, which in Milan is often 2–3 months. A slightly higher rent with everything included and no deposit can be cheaper overall.
For a stay of weeks or months you need a desk, fast Wi-Fi, a real kitchen and a washing machine. Ask for recent photos and the exact bed size.
Stays over 30 days require a lease registered with the tax office. It protects you and you need it for residence, permits and scholarships. How the transitional lease works.
A host who answers quickly before booking usually answers quickly during your stay too.
